Corporation is a good Sim-Tower clone - Review

Maybe you remember Sim-Tower published by Maxis (now EA) in the 1990s.  While the original came on floppies or CD in a box and cost money.  Corporation inc from Armor games is available online for free.  This game allows you to build and manage your corporation's business & skyscraper.  You hire staff, build the office, research new positions and facilities.  You ensure IT is hired and equipped and that the janitorial staff cleans up at night...

Above all else this simulation game is a resource management game.  At first you may find yourself waiting to earn enough in order to provide the basics, but kindly the game designer provided a control to speed up time, so waiting is not a problem.  In fact you will quickly get to the point where money simply isn't an issue.  Like most games, you have options to upgrade people and facilities, which are released slowly.  Researching (researchers + time) is the recipe for unlocking everything in the game, then you only have to pay for the upgrades.

Like businesses anywhere you start small.  A limited staff, a limited building height and gradually build.  Quickly your elevators can't move staff fast enough and they spend the morning waiting in the lobby before they can get a lift to their office. Elevator upgrades and careful assignment of staff to appropriate desks and things start to smooth out.  Hire managers to motivate staff,  IT guys to fix computers and lights, Janitors to come in at night and clean up the garbage.

Earning Money
In the game a worker earns $1 every time they push a button.  The money they earn each time can be increased by the following;

  • having a manager motivate them
  • having an upgraded office
  • promoting the staff
  • hiring accountants

Now the real money in this game seems to come with hiring accountants.  Each accountant boosts your company's earnings by 5%.  After 20 Accountants, you have doubled your money.  Corporation is really a feel good game in that you WILL turn a profit and you will end up with more money than you know what to do with.

Objectives
Throughout the game there are objectives you are challenged to meet.  Hire so many staff, earn so much, install certain facilities.  They provide some interest to help you past the repetitive mechanics of the game.

Emoticons
Corporation inc uses emoticons to allow you to see what your staff are experiencing.  Everything from needing more  washroom facilities or faster elevators, to being irritated by the noise caused by adjacent elevators.  The emoticons are an effective means of allowing the player to see the state of their game.insight into the state

Room for improvement
The controls take some getting used to.  The idea that an elevator can be build beside rather than over top of an office wasn't immediately obvious.  The game will eventually allow you to build to a height of 120 stories.  navigation becomes a pain, but fortunately the game designer provided a clickable mini tower to shift your perspective as well as the WASD keys for navigation.  Things are going to slow down when you get a big tower which is annoying because you are waiting for the screen to catch up, waiting for the object to appear etc.

Summary
Overall it is a really nice playable game.  It is easy to lose yourself for several hours building a fictitious business empire in Corporation inc .

Cheers,
Greg
